A sign on a daycare door in Hockley, Texas has taken the internet by storm.
This particular note wasn’t to inform or welcome parents. It wasn’t posted to warn them of lice, or an illness in the classroom. The sign on the door of this daycare was posted to expose the problematic behaviors that the daycare supervisors noticed from the parents.
Many of the parents were appalled by the sign. But not Julia Mazurkewicz. She took a picture of the sign and posted it to her Facebook page and more than 1 million people chimed in with their opinions.
The daycare sign read:
“You are picking up your child! GET OFF YOUR PHONE!!!!
Your child is happy to see you! Are you not happy to see your child?? We have seen children trying to hand their parents their work they completed and the parent is on the phone.
We have heard a child say, ‘Mommy, Mommy, Mommy…’ and the parent is paying more attention to their phone than their own child. It is appalling. Get off your phone!!!”
The people commenting on Julia’s post were angry. One person even said, “This is ridiculous. Who is anyone to tell a child’s parent not to use their phone? They might be working? Or have an emergency or anything else that’s none of their business.”
This particular person was quite offended, but not Julia. She agreed with the daycare, and was even able to recognize the behavior in herself. She told CNN, “I was a bit shocked, but I didn’t feel any negativity towards the daycare. I now that the staff has the best interests of the children in mind, even to the point where they are willing to offend the parent.”
Another person commented, offering a helpful alternative. She said, “…instead they could have put up a poster about the benefits of parents engaging with their children…they have not gone about this is the right way.”
What do you think? Should the daycare have handled this issue differently?
