Police officer comforting teen with autism goes viral

The kindness of a Charlotte-Mecklenburg police officer went viral after he helped a young, possibly suicidal boy with autism who had wandered off. See the video below:

The CMPD hero, Tim Purdy, notes that his viral actions are an example of what law enforcement does daily. He hopes that this video will give people more faith in police officers.

Purdy showed a great deal of patience, kindness, and gentleness with the teen in his attempts to establish a comfort zone.

Slowly but surely, Officer Purdy was able to gain the young man’s trust. Purdy was able to get on the his level and establish a connection. They struck up a conversation about sports, school, and family and shared laughs over a package of gum. Eventually, the student was returned safely home to his family.

Since going viral, the post has received a plethora of supportive comments. The officer’s mom even weighed in.

I also sit here with tears in my eyes because I am Tim’s Momma and I am so proud of him,” she said. “He has always gone out of his way to help people. It does my heart good to read so many peoples comments showing support and respect to him. Our police officers put their lives in harms way daily to Serve and Protect you and I. God bless them all.”

As stated in the original post, “There’s more to policing than making arrests and enforcing the law. Sometimes, taking those extra little steps makes the biggest difference in someone’s life.”
