Officers Caught Him Skipping The Subway Fare. Their Next Move Changed His Life.

People will do anything when they’re down on their luck and desperate and some of that, unfortunately, involves small crime, whether it’s intentional or not.

In one case, a man, Sangeeth Wijesinghe, and his wife needed to catch the train at the Thompkinsville Station of the Staten Island Railways but only had enough money for one ticket. So, in order to catch the train, then man jumped the turnstiles.

However, then man was caught by two MTA police officers, Christopher D’Onofrio and Paul Martino, who were working at the station at the time.

After the officers heard Wijesinghe’s backstory and his struggle to find a steady job, they decided to help him out. D’Onofrio called a personal friend who managed a grocery store which was close by.

That was on April 15th and since then Wijesinghe has been working a steady 60 hours a week at the Bola market.
