There’s a new scam that’s spreading across the U.S., collection calls from individuals claiming to be IRS agents, requesting payment for fake liens and threatening seizure of property or arrest.
One of the numbers that has received the most complaints is 202-609-7070 , as well as other 202 area code numbers. So far over $5 million dollars has been raked in by scammers from nearly 1000 unsuspecting victims. The callers have mostly thick foreign accents.
Many victims also claim that after refusing to pay, the scammers call back pretending to be local police and threatening to arrest them unless they pay up.
If you get a call from the number, don’t pick up — and if they do happen to reach you, you can report it to the U.S. Treasury’s fraud hotline at 1-800-366-4484.
