Don Thomas was a frequent customer at a Hooters restaurant in Roswell, Georgia. Due to his frequent visits, he bonded with some of the staff including one special waitress named Mariana Tolentino.
Over time, Mariana and Don broached the topic of Don’s battle with kidney cancer. According to Don, both of his kidneys had been ravaged by the cancer, and soon his lack of functioning kidneys would claim his life.
Coincidentally, Mariana’s grandmother passed away from a similar kidney defect a short while prior. Mariana said that it pained her that she was unable to help her grandmother at the time. However, this time Mariana knew what she needed to do.
Mariana decided, in a show of true altruism, to donate one of her kidneys to Don to keep him alive.
In spite of the fact that Don is an older man who she only knew from work, Mariana found it within herself to give up a part of her body to help Don live just a few more years.
You may be unwilling to give up an organ to a stranger, but you should still follow Mariana’s example of Christlike generosity.
