A Facebook post made by the Cheyenne, Wyoming Police Department has gone viral recently after they arrested a man for public intoxication.
According to the Cheyenne Police Department, the man was publicly intoxicated while panhandling on the streets and needed to be brought in. At the time of his arrest, police found nearly $240 in cash in the possession of the homeless man, collected in “just a few” hours asking for money on the side of the road.
Here’s what they wrote online.
Yesterday, July 22, we arrested a transient for public intoxication. This is a person we frequently deal with, but we want to illustrate that there are better ways to help the transient population than to give them money for panhandling.
This person collected $234.94 in just a few hours of asking for money. Rather than feeding someone’s alcohol addiction, you can donate directly to local charities such as the Comea Shelter where your money will assist the homeless in a much more effective way.
Police say that next time you want to help someone in need, it’s wiser to give to a charity, that way you know the money is going towards improving the lives of homeless individuals.
