Unforgettable: Bush’s Bullhorn Address At Ground Zero

During any major crisis, a presidential address is expected. But George W. Bush decide to take it a step further, by making an impromptu address at the heart of the recovery effort, against all advice. 13 years later, it’s perhaps one of his most memorable moments in his presidency.

He stood with retired firefighter Bob Beckwith, who was helping with the recovery at the site of the attack, grabbed a bullhorn and proceeded to address the crowd. The speech caused the crowd to erupt into chants of “U.S.A.” and help uplift spirits of those in the shattered city.

Very few smiles were seen on the faces of New Yorkers during those dark days, but the relief that the President brought during this unexpected address, even if just for a brief moment, was truly needed among those in the middle of it all.
