Navy veteran Vanessa Hicks is photographer from Virginia Beach that specializes in taking photos of babies.
After posting images from a recent photo shoot on Facebook she was thrust into a storm of controversy. The image in question was a photo of a Navy sailor’s baby that was cradled in the American flag.
“I do believe that this picture right here shows what it means to be an American,” Hicks told CNN affiliate WTKR.”That flag, the uniform, that baby — exactly what every service member is out there fighting.” Hicks’ husband is also in the Navy and currently deployed.
Some of the critics of her photo claimed that wrapping a baby in the U.S. flag turned the flag into a prop, desecrating old glory.
Hicks’ photo wasn’t without it’s supporters, however. One Twitter user called it a “Beautiful representation of hope, freedom and new life.”

Hicks has stood her ground and continues to offer the photo to any other service members who wants a similar photo with their newborn.
