Being able to communicate with animals has been the dream of zoologists for hundreds of years. In fact, Koko the gorilla is famous solely because of her astounding communication abilities.
Koko the gorilla is able to communicate with her trainer, Francine Patterson, by using over 1,000 sign language signs. She also understands about 2,000 english words.
Koko has has been telling her handlers that she’s wanted a baby gorilla for quite some time through her sign and body language. The video shows her caring for a stuffed gorilla and other toys the same way she would her a real baby.
Koko’s handlers believe that she would teach her baby to sign like she does, which opens up all sorts of interesting possibilities for communication. Imagine what would be possible if all gorilla’s could communicate the way Koko does!
Koko is also the only known animal to have a pet in the same way we do. In 1984 Koko was given a kitten that she named “All Ball”.Koko hasn’t gotten her wish just yet, but her handlers are working on it. The video shows that she has the makings of a great mom!
