We’ve all been in a situation where we were condemned over an honest mistake. It’s never a pleasant occurrence and it’s one that can be easily avoided.
17-year-old Atiya Haynes is an honor student at Annapolis High School who participates in a variety of extracurricular activities. She was suspended when they found a knife in her purse during a football game.
Atiya was given the pocket knife by her grandfather. During the summer she had to ride her bike from southwest Detroit to Deerborn for her job. Her Grandfather gave her the knife so she can protect herself.

She had forgotten that the knife was in her purse, and it found during a bag search at a high school football game, and now will no longer be allowed to come back to the school.
When asked by reporters of the punishment, Haynes replied: “I’m disgusted, I can’t believe that…no empathy. Put your child in this situation. Every time you forget your keys to your house, think of me. Think of this honest mistake.”
The school says they follow a no tolerance policy when it comes to weapons, the question is: should they rethink that policy for this case?
