In the Shaanxi Province of China, 5 elderly women wake up early every morning for a noble cause; to make sure 1,3000 stray dogs all get their breakfast.
The sheer number of canines they feed shouldn’t come to a surprise if you know anything about dog policy in China. For starters, each household is only allowed one dog, on top of that, if the dog is too large it will be taken to a shelter where it will be euthanize. It doesn’t help that they consider 11 lbs to be “too big”.
Wang Yangfang wanted to put a stop to that, so she created her own dog sanctuary to keep them out of the shelters. Her sanctuary relies primarily on donations and only has 4 volunteers, not including Yankfang.
All of the volunteers are women in their 60’s-70’s who wake up at 4 in the morning to cook, feed, clean up after, and groom all of the dogs.
Not all of the dogs are little balls of sunshine either. One of the ladies said that some will bark at and bite you, but that doesn’t stop them from taking care of the pooches like they’re one of their own. “They’re like your children, you can’t bear to be apart from them, or to lose them.” she told CCTV news.
