Amid a brutal winter in the north east U.S., millions of Americans are choosing to stay in the warmth as much as possible to avoid the freezing temps. But the icy weather is not just affecting us warm blooded animals, it’s taking it’s toll on mother nature as well.
Jonathan Nimerfroh, a surfing ocean photographer, made the trek out to the freezing waters to capture the ice waves in all their glory.

With a high of only 19 degrees Fahrenheit (-7C), the surface of the ocean turned into a thin layer of ice, causing incoming waves to crash down on top of it which created the slushy effect.

These icy waves are not a common phenomenon in the northeast, and was only made possible because of the record-lows made this winter.

It’s a rare occurrence to see a beautiful northeastern beach and not want to jump in, but you’d be crazy to try it in these frigid waters. You can check out more great ocean photography by Nimerfroh on his website.
