Parenting is hard. We all want to raise good, kind, hard-working, self-sufficient adults. We all want the best for our kids.
Such is the case with Georgia mom Cierra Forney. In a Facebook post, Forney explained that her son had been acting a bit “entitled. Acting like he’s too good to shop at Wal-Mart or making snarky comments about kids at school who shop at Goodwill…” Behavior Forney doesn’t tolerate.
She decided to turn the tables on her 13-year-old son. She made him spend his own $20.00 and took him to Goodwill to buy his clothes for the entire week of school.
Forney said her son was not happy and even shed a few tears; however, she said she hopes it’s a lesson he’ll look back on and “laugh that his Mom made him shop at Goodwill.”
“I want to teach my kids that money isn’t everything and if you have to degrade other people because of where they shop, then you too will shop there,” Forney wrote.

So lately, my 13 year old son had been acting a little… entitled. Acting like he’s too good to shop at Wal-Mart or making snarky comments about kids at school who shop at the goodwill and quite a few other things. I don’t tolerate that. Today, he took his own 20.00 to the goodwill to buy clothes to wear the entire week to school. Whatever he found is what he would have to wear. He isn’t happy and shed a few tears but I firmly believe in 15 years he will look back and laugh at the day his Mom made him shop at goodwill. I want to teach my kids that money isn’t everything and if you have to degrade other people because of where they shop, then you too will shop there. Side note, I love the goodwill!!
We love to this old fashioned style of parenting! Do you have a story like this about how your parents raised you to be respectful? We’d love it if you’d share it with us in the comments!
