A mother of a middle school student in Florida has been arrested on charges of child abuse after her daughter showed up to school in what officials deemed as an abusive shirt.
31-year-old Melany Joynce Alexander wrote the following note on a white shirt and made her daughter, Alexander, wear it after coming home with all F’s on her report card.
A section on the shirt reads:
“My eating french fries and being a social butterfly is over because I know why my parents send me to school. I now know the importance of an education. I will learn. I will listen to all my teachers and be respectful at all times,”
Other parents called the punishment excessive, even humiliating. The mother was arrested after the noticed the shirt and called in local police.
The arrest report, however, also states that the girl had “numerous bruises and belt marks to the child’s arms and shoulders down to her wrists.” Melany Joynce is now being healed on $2500 bail.
